UPDATED: 6/2/25
Our New Castle family mourns the loss of a beloved Trojan, John Scott Griffith. A 1969 NCHS graduate, Mr. Griffith made New Castle his forever home. He taught in the Corporation for forty-five years as our NCMS Math Teacher, and strengthened #TrojanPride during his role as Athletic Director. As a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States, John complimented our Corporation School Board values, where he faithfully served the past two and a half years. Dedicated to the growth and promotion of New Castle Schools, our students, families, staff, and community members have been positively changed by his extraordinary and generous life. Our honor and condolences go to his family in this difficult time. Thank you, Mr. Griffith, for nurturing young minds, fostering a passion for knowledge, and instilling a lifelong love of learning in every life you touched. You are, and forever will be, part of the great Trojan legacy.
John Griffith’s family would like to welcome the New Castle Community to join them for his

As most of you have seen on social media, our High School Show Choir Director, and Music Business Teacher, D.J. Shumaker, suffered from a seizure during the Show Choir State Finals this past Saturday. He experienced a sentinel headache, which led to a hemorrhaging brain bleed. He was rushed to the hospital and flown by LifeLine to Indianapolis. Since Saturday, Mr. Shumaker has had multiple surgeries to release swelling within his brain, and is still in critical condition. His devoted wife, Sarah Shumaker, is our NCHS Freshman English teacher, and is facing grief and uncertainty. We want to honor their family privacy, but continue to show full support. Our choral students witnessed the traumatic event, and also need your thoughts and prayers. The Dynamiques Girls Choir had won Grand Champion earlier that morning, and Mr. Shumaker collapsed shortly before the Red Hot Blues Mixed Choir took the stage. The students competed under this added stress, but went on to earn Second Place at State! The day was full of emotional highs and lows, but because of both choirs' training and teamwork, they endured together despite the tragedy. We are also grateful to Noblesville High School staff and counselors, as they protected our privacy and provided physical and emotional care for our staff and students. We are proud of the Trojan Family Community for the emotional, spiritual, and financial support they have already shown the Shumaker family. We do not wish to prevent impact of the Go-Fund-Me pages, or other fundraisers that have already been started within the community, but if you or your family would like to show support through letters, cards, non-perishable snacks, or gas/gift cards, you may bring them to the New Castle School Corporation Central Office: 322 Elliott Avenue, New Castle, IN 47362. We are open Monday through Friday, 7:30AM to 3:30PM. We will send your gifts and encouragement to Mrs. Shumaker and her immediate family in a timely manner. Again, we are very grateful for the love and support this community has already shown to this hurting couple. The Shumakers have lovingly served and influenced hundreds of our Trojan families, and we will fully support them on the journey to recovery. Our hearts are hopeful for the health and healing of D.J. Shoemaker. Thank you. Rhema Glover | Communications Specialist rglover@ncweb.me New Castle Community School Corporation 322 Elliott Avenue New Castle, IN 47362 Phone 765-521-7201
