Students in the Health Science Education (HSE) program at the New Castle Career Center (NCCC) recently applied their skills at “A Fresh Start For Your Heart,” a community event hosted by the Henry County Heart Society. This event gave students a hands-on chance to participate in public health education and community service.
Monitoring Vital Signs and Educating the Community
Kendra Wilson, director of Respiratory Therapy at Henry Community Health, invited HSE students to the event to monitor attendees' vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation. Nine students volunteered to take measurements and share health information with community members.
“Heart disease is the number one killer worldwide, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” noted Angie Talbott, Health Science Education Instructor at NCCC. “Prevention starts with education.”
Students had the opportunity to teach attendees about hypertension, often called “the silent killer” because it can have no noticeable symptoms but lead to serious health problems. Elevated blood pressure can cause a stroke, heart attack, or organ failure.
In addition to receiving health assessments, students practiced practical skills such as taking vital signs and observed how proper health monitoring contributes to longevity and a better quality of life.
“Community service is a vital part of the HSE Program,” Talbott added. “It’s important for students to give back, and sharing this information makes for a healthier community.”
Supporting the Henry County Heart Society
The event also included vendors, a silent auction, and a raffle, with proceeds benefiting the Henry County Heart Society. Guest speaker Julie West shared her personal story about how school AEDs can save lives, emphasizing the importance of community awareness and preparedness. Six AEDs were awarded to local organizations, including the New Castle Career Center.
The Henry County Heart Society hopes to make this an annual event that combines fun, education, and community support to encourage heart health in Henry County.
“We are proud of our students for serving the community and promoting heart health awareness” expressed Mackenzie Jackson, New Castle Career Center Director. ”Also, a big thank you to the Henry County Heart Society for the AED.”
